For someone who functions as the opposite and is also the artist's love interest, see Love Makes You Uncreative. Or Muse Abuse, although it often follows. Not to be confused with the British rock band Muse. Not incidentally, the same story provides a codifying example of Muse Abuse. The magazine Strange Horizons mentions among a List of stories we've seen too often "Creative person meets a muse (either one of the nine classical Muses or a more individual muse) and interacts with them, usually by keeping them captive." Neil Gaiman has commented in his online journal: "I have a fairly good memory, and don't recall ever reading any captive-muse-for-someone-with-writer's-block stories before I wrote mine." This would make Gaiman's story (detailed below) the Trope Codifier, at least for the supernatural version of the trope. Of course, art often mirrors life in this regard, and many fictional artists have muses of their own-sometimes, in fact, literal Muses from classical Greek mythology. If said woman is an actress, she'll be cast in the main female role in every one of the director's movies, at least until their relationship breaks down. ![]() This concept is often invoked by many real-life creators by attributing a real-life person special to them as their "personal muse." Usually occurs with a female muse for a male creator, but the inverse (or a combination thereof) is not too uncommon. In a sense, this posits that all great works of art are linked to the divine and their creators are merely vessels for which divine forces can channel their energy. These entities exist to seek out creative people and inspire them to create great works of art. In Greek Mythology, there is a subset of spirits/goddesses under the guidance of Apollo known as muses. It would be the highest rated show of a given season.- Homer, The Iliad, Book II (translation by Robert Fagles) My hope is that somebody gets the bright idea to have a reunion episode and maybe finally marry Jessica Fletcher and Dr. I think it's a shame that William Windom never got an Emmy for playing Dr. Windom played it absolutely straight and his medical knowledge occasionally helped Lansbury solve the case. Hazlett any kind of buffoon the way Nigel Bruce was as Doctor Watson to Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes. ![]() The writers in Murder, She Wrote very wisely never made Dr. I suspect that back in their youth Jessic and Seth were an item and the way Lansbury and Windom are with each other, you can see the bonds are strong. Her best scenes are with William Windom, the crusty old town doctor, Seth Hazlitt. But even there she never embarrassed Bosley or Masak in solving the cases. Though that presents a problem in that Cabot Cove given the percentage of the population might just have the highest murder rate in the country. I liked the Cabot Cove shows best and I suspect most viewers did. About half the episodes took place in the little New England coastal town of Cabot Cove where William Windom as the town doctor and first sheriff Tom Bosley and then sheriff Ron Masak got assistance from Jessica Fletcher every time she was in town at her home. ![]() It was part of her charm for them and for us. The amazing thing is that most of them simply went with the flow as far as her interference with their investigation. ![]() For twelve years she got every weekend to show up the police in every corner of the globe that they had the wrong solution to a given murder. Just look at the cast list of any random selection of Murder, She Wrote episodes. What I like best about her is the fact that she used her star power to give lots of work to her fellow performers from the golden age of Hollywood's studio system who weren't as lucky with their careers as she. Let's not forget she's a star in all three mediums. Angela Lansbury is maybe one of the kindest and most unselfish of players ever to grace the big screen, the small screen and the legitimate theater. I'm willing to bet that Angela Lansbury could command any kind of deal she could have if she wanted to do more episodes of this wonderful series. I'm not quite sure why Murder She Wrote isn't still running.
